The Shire has received grant funding from the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) to increase tree canopy coverage in Waroona this winter. Our townsite rates poorly for urban tree canopy coverage and we are trying to improve this.
Our parks and gardens team will be busy planting trees between May and September in verges where street trees are needed. Please see the below/attached map that shows the areas we are targeting. The trees will be roughly 1m high when planted, but once they mature will increase the canopy coverage in town. A higher canopy coverage has the following benefits:
- Keeping streets, yards and footpaths cooler in summer by reducing the urban heat island effect;
- Absorbing stormwater and improving water quality;
- Supporting our wellbeing and quality of life;
- Providing food and shelter for birds and wildlife;
- Increasing property values; and
- Improving the visual appearance of our streetscapes.

We will be using native species and supporting local nurseries where possible. The costs associated with the purchase of the trees is fully funded by WALGA.
