Construction of the Waroona Community Precinct is officially underway, with a ground-breaking ceremony commemorating the start of the project this week.

The new Precinct aims to revitalise the town centre, acting as a vibrant, central hub for residents and an attractive ‘stop and stay’ destination for visitors to the area.

Waroona Shire President Mike Walmsley joined Aboriginal elder Rob Jetta, the Hon Alannah MacTiernan, Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke and representatives from key stakeholders, including Peel Development Commission, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, Alcoa and the Lions Club of Waroona in turning the first sod at the Fouracre Street site.

Cr Walmsley said planning and fundraising for the Precinct has been a true community effort and the Shire was committed to delivering an accessible space with excellent amenities for residents and visitors alike.

“The new green space in the Waroona town centre will have something for everyone, and is designed to combine heritage, culture, art and recreation for enjoyment by families, seniors, youth and visitors simultaneously.,” Cr Walmsley said.

“There is also the potential to attract an additional 23,600 visitors each year, which translates into $0.84 million of additional visitor expenditure to the Waroona community”.

Planned features of the Precinct include:

  • Playgrounds with seating and shade

  • A big open park area for an amphitheatre and events

  • An all-ages skate park and pump track

  • Accessible toilets, pathways, shelter, BBQs and seating.

  • Excellent amenities and RV facilities including rest areas and daytime and overnight RV parking

The $4.23 million project has been supported by the WA Government with a $1.3 million election commitment and a further $0.248M injection through the Department of Local Government Sport and Cultural Industries. A further $0.9M has been committed by the federal government, with remaining funds contributed by the Shire of Waroona, Alcoa, Lotterywest and the Lions Club of Waroona.
